Days 60-63 30 Dec 2015 - 2 Jan 2016 San Diego CA

Day 60  30 December 2015 Escondido to San Diego CA (51 miles)
We went to La Jolla CA where Ed lived for three years from 1957 to 1960. His family rented a house at 8305 Camino del Oro that was then the only house on the block in 1957. Now it's filled with houses.
We had lunch in Kellogg Park opposite the house.
It is about 300 yards from the beach.
Pier at Scripps Oceanographic Institute
Dowitchers
We arrived at Susan Farabaugh's at 2pm and helped her to disassemble this jigsaw puzzle.

Day 61 31 December 2015 San Diego (6 miles)
Breakfast at Susan's.
Susan is a director of conservation programs at San Diego Zoo and gave us passes for the day.
As we entered the zoo there was a talk about this long-horned owl.
These fluorescent Caribbean flamingos near the main entrance must get a good diet.
Andean condor. Young Andean condors from San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have been released in Venezuela and Colombia.
Female king eider -- she kept splashing the visitors by flapping her wings.
Male king eider
The elephants are all trained to present their feet so the keepers can inspect them. This elephant had an infected foot that needed attention, and happily held its foot up as long as it was fed.
Female southern gerenuk
We waited in line to see two giant pandas, an elderly female and this more entertaining young one.
Meerkats
There were living animals on display that are near relatives of extinct species, many of which used to live in southern California.

Day 62  01 January 2016  San Diego

Another glorious day in San Diego.
Susan took us to Cabrillo, the park at the end of Point Loma
North Island Naval Air Station (Halsey Field), Coronado Beach and downtown San Diego.
Visitor center at Point Loma
Naval base at the left and San Diego Bay.
The Coronado Islands are a Mexican wildlife refuge between 15 and 19 miles south of the entrance to San Diego bay.
We went to one of Susan's favorite places for dinner.
The following is our review for TripAdvisor:
Homage to pork and bacon5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2016 via mobile Great sandwiches with an emphasis on meat, mostly pork, tasty sides and some excellent beers. We had the triple threat pork (schnitzel, pulled pork and bacon), carnitas tacos and pork belly app. All simple but tasty and well presented. Seating is outside and informal, conducive to kicking back and relaxing with friends.

Day 63 - 02 January 2016 - San Diego Zoo Safari Park (100 miles)
Susan's farewell gift was passes to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido.
Susan works on these shrikes on San Clemente Island, where they live on a naval bombing range.
Marketing of food and souvenirs is big business.
The Safari Park included wonderful displays of plants as well as animals.
California condor
Keeper talk featuring Suka, born 14 September and rejected by his first-time mother.
They used food to train him so he is easier to handle when he gets bigger and dangerous.
There were some amazingly long lenses in the crowd.
Three female lions tuck into lunch.
Blue crane -- South Africa's threatened national bird
Rhinos
Thomson's gazelle
Two giraffes "necking"
